Default home-based location or not?

If you operate out of your home, there are many expenses you can deduct, but have you found that there are disadvantages as well?

I think if you have a psace in your home that you can keep completely separated than home based day care is a good idea...but yes that is not possible always so the minuses are that your home does not remain a personal space anymore...there are things you want to do alone or toher members of th family need to do....their may be guest coming who find they have to share their rooms with so many kids...etc.

I have do some daycare work at home in the past, and have deducted any cost from my business expenses as I am self-employed.

A friend of mine ran daycare from her home without separate accommodations. I think her whole 1st floor was deductible.

If I had younger children of my own, I would have the daycare at a location separate from my home.

I like having a clear division between my business time and my personal time.

I think that is good point, that if you have kids, maybe there should a separate place for work, and one for family life.

Yes, I can't help wondering if your home is the same location as your daycare, wouldn't some parents just be tempted to show up when it's convenient for them to ask something, even if it's outside of business hours. They'll just assume you're there and available.

that is a good point to consider lyndsey...it is a natural thing for anyone to stop by and call or visit if it is your home and also the daycare....it ijust does not remain a private property anymore.

I have had parents call me in the middle of the night. They called the business number, but that still meant the phone rang somewhere in the house.
