References and therefore some experience would be key elements for me. You'd be surprised how many people think you won't actually check their references.

I think getting references & background check is essential for finding potential employee's for a daycare centre.

Don't forget to have the potential employee provide health records, or to have a physical check up before they start working in your daycare.

Most people don't have any horrendous diseases, but it is important to make sure the children aren't exposed to chronic, contagious illnesses, like Tuberculosis!

I actually never thought of that laughing mouse...ie checking for diseases...and you are so right..it may sound a bit harsh for the prospective employer but when it comes to the kids safety...you can not take any chances...

Yes, most schools I know of ask for criminal background checks, so I would think daycares should be doing the same thing.

I was thinking what about a psychometric test or something just to know that the person will be patient and behave rationally with the kids...there are so many people who look quite nice by appearence but may be harsh to kinds you know....think of all those movies like matilda....

I would first look for people working toward a teaching license.

Many states require a certain number of volunteer hours that count toward their licensing requirements. It's an untapped, dedicated pool of talent, and you don't have to pay them a salary!
